With the assembly line, GM could produce cars much faster and at a lower cost. This made cars more affordable for the average person, and it really helped to popularize the automobile in America.

The Golden Age of Innovation: 1920s – 1950s

The 1920s to the 1950s were like the golden age of GM’s innovation. They came up with so many cool features that we take for granted today.

One of the biggest innovations was the introduction of annual model changes. Alfred P. Sloan, who was the president of GM during this time, realized that people liked new and different things. So, he came up with the idea of changing the car models every year. This created a sense of excitement and made people want to buy the latest cars. It also helped GM stay ahead of the competition.

Another major innovation was the development of automatic transmissions. Before automatic transmissions, you had to shift gears manually, which could be a pain, especially in stop – and – go traffic. GM’s engineers worked hard to develop a reliable automatic transmission, and in 1939, they introduced the Hydra – Matic transmission. It was a huge success and made driving much easier for everyone.

GM also made significant advancements in safety during this period. They introduced things like safety glass, which was much stronger and less likely to shatter than regular glass. This helped to protect passengers in case of an accident.

The Space Age and Beyond: 1960s – 1980s

The 1960s were all about the space age, and GM was right in the middle of it. They were inspired by the space program and started to incorporate some of the technology into their cars.

One of the most notable innovations was the development of the turbocharger. A turbocharger helps an engine produce more power by forcing more air into the combustion chamber.
